KATE MIDDLETON'S TATTOO

Apparently Prince Harry isn't the only one in Buckingham Palace with a Rock'n Roll edge to him. Over the weekend news got out Princess Kate Middleton has been hiding a secret.. she has a tattoo! It isn't as drastic as Rihanna's chest eagle or a bum full of flowers like Cheryl Cole, the princess has opted for something smaller and more subtle. Some people might not even consider it a tattoo. However permanent ink and a needle have been used, so technically it is a tattoo.

The Duchess of Cambridge has a cosmetic tattoo on the eyes, also known as permanent makeup. Thanks to two thin black lines Kate looks awake and  put together at all times. In the pictures below you can see the results pretty well.

You can see the permanent eyeliner right below the waterline, it goes perfectly through the bottom lashes.

So what exactly is this permanent makeup Kate has on? And how permanent is it?
"Permanent makeup is a cosmetic technique which employs tattoos (permanent pigmentation of the dermis) as a means of producing designs that resemble makeup, such as eyelining and other permanent enhancing colors to the skin of the face, lips and eyelids." "Most commonly called permanent cosmetics, other names include dermapigmentation, micropigmentation and cosmetic tattooing, the latter being most appropriate since permanent makeup is, in fact, tattooing."

What are the results when you opt for permanent makeup?
There are immediate results and long term results. At first the permanent makeup may look darker. This is due to color remaining in the outermost epidermal layers of skin at the start. In the next days the colors will soften because of the healing process as the upper layers of epidermis slough and are replaced by new epidermal cells. How long your makeup will last depends from person to person and will be influenced by different factors. For example sun exposure will fade the colors faster.

What if you don't like the results?
It is possible to remove the permanent makeup, like you can remove any other tattoo. BUT its is difficult and expensive. Common techniques used to do this are laser resurfacing, dermabrasion (physical or chemical exfoliation) and surgical removal. Do take in mind that the removal is often more painful than the tattooing itself!

Permanent makeup - eyeliner and eyebrows

Although I like the look on Kate and understand why she has opted for permanent eyeliner, as she gets photographed everyday and everywhere, I would never consider permanent makeup myself, certainly not on my face. Even in the best beauty salon, the procedure could still go wrong or you could end up not liking the results. Just imagine getting your eyebrows filled in and the color turning out too dark or the wrong shade.. Then you will be stuck with them for the next 10 years. Also trends and personal preferences change. Black eyeliner has been a pretty steady makeup trend over the last couple of years, but will it still be in by 2020? What if white or blue is the "in" color by then? Or what if you go from blonde to black hair, would your permanent eyebrows still match?

And besides, sometimes a natural and bare face is the prettiest look you can wear. Just ask your boyfriend! ;)

But what do you think? Would you ever consider permanent eyeliner? Or any other permanent makeup procedure? Let me know in the comments, I want to hear about your personal thoughts and experiences!

  1. Interesting article about permanent (tattoo) makeup. I agree that the Duchess's eyeliner does appear to be permanent. One of the appearances of tattoo eyeliner is the visible white "waterline" between the lashes/tattoo and the eye. Some feel that this is unattractive or aging or looks unnatural somehow. Actual eyeliner is natural kohl, which is ghee soot (has antimicrobial and moisturizing properties) dabbed on the waterline. The liner is inside the lashline, not on it or below it. In addition to cleaning and moisturizing the eye, natural kohl blocks the glare from the sun where it's most needed, which is on the waterline. Especially in an extreme climate, where your eyes would be watering from sand, sweat, etc., and in that case the kohl serves a third function: as a physical barrier to protect the eye. Another comment that has been made is that Princess Diana also famously and boldly wore eyeliner. However, as a woman of the 1980s, she wore it on the waterline, like natural kohl. This was before people were told that these liquid liners were not safe to wear at the surface of the eye. Later in Diana's life, it appears she wore natural kohl. I always wondered if her international lifestyle showed its African influence in that she wore (what seemed to be) natural kohl in the proper way. Good quality kohl needs to be maintained once or twice a day at first, but reapplication isn't needed for days afterward. Kohl blackens the lashes as they grow and makes an excellent mascara over time. Making your kohl can be done: burn ghee to soot, allow it to dry, and scrape into a container. Use only the highest surgical quality implements and natural ghee. Avoid low grade stainless steel or any other alloy due to nickle and other metals contamination. I think tattoos should be saved for art or medical uses. There are many easy makeup options to bring out the best in anyone, including the Duchess. However, if she did indeed have permanent makeup done, I hope that it meets her expectations. She seems to be a confident happy person.

  2. What if five years ago Kate, Pippa, and Carole got drunk and went to a spa where they all had the permanent make-up done? Crikey. The could explain WHY Kate and the females in her family PERSIST with the odd eye liner look. Oh my oh my ! Hope it eventually wears off. Get me some smelling salts.

  6. I have recently had to deal with my wife getting her eyebrows done and for me it is absolutely not natural looking. I was so upset and still am if im honest. She had beautiful delicate eyebrows that I loved but now looks like she's going out when she wakes up. It doesn't look bad from a distance and it's not an exaggerated brow but up close which is where I am normally it doesn't look real and they clearly look like drawn on lines and not hairs. If you are the type of person who wears makeup all the time and quite a bit of it too then go for it. But beware, one minor mistake and you are stuck with it for good. If you have a partner discuss it with him and also go through Google images of results so you can both see what it may look like. I would also add that if you can find a picture of a natural looking brow then congratulations because I couldn't. She wants eyeliner now and I've said that I don't want her to have it done. Her decision though so we'll see. I'll leave you with this thought though. Would you ever spend time at home with half or quarter done makeup applied??? If you don't have your full face on then it looks ridiculous so think hard. There is nothing semi permanent about it.....it's a tattoo and mistakes can happen

    1. Hi Adam! I'm sorry you weren't pleased with your wife's results. Especially without makeup I can imagine it takes some adjustment.. Especially for you it's hard to get used to the new eyebrows when you were happy with them before.. I hope you'll be able to accept the change and make a compromise with your wife for future treatments! xX

    1. Hi Ryan, of course! Permanent makeup can be definitely an option for many people. I think the most important thing to keep in mind before taking the plunge, is to find an expert who listens to the clients' wishes and knows their products.

  16. I've had permanent eye makeup for 15 years and I highly recommend it. I researched makeup artists and found one that I trusted to do a good and safe job. No one has ever guessed that mine is permanent. It looks so natural.

  17. I first had "permanent" liner & brows & full lips done back in 2004. It is NOT permanent & it fades enough on me that I have just had liner & brows redone for the 4th time. Some things stated in the article made me laugh! If styles change & you don't want black liner you can apply the blue/whatever over it. Same with brows - if you go from blonde to black then just pencil your brows black. Tattooing changes the texture of the skin so makeup applied over stays on much better. When I put lipstick on it stays put :)
